There's an app that's adding free VoIP phone service to its 1 million users. It sounds like an impossibly big user base — the kind most companies could only dream of — until you consider the source: Weixin is a popular multimedia and voice messaging app (like South Korea's KakaoTalk) in China, land of 1 billion people. Knowing that makes 1 million seem kind of paltry, now, doesn't it?
Anyhow, Weixin 4.2 is adding VoIP services, and Bluetooth support. Although the release date hasn't been publicized, iOS and Android Weixin app users in China will be able to access free voice and chat in addition to sending instant voice messages, texts, group texts, and photos. Weixin also supports emoticons and location sharing.
