In the past 15 months or so, the technology industry has been raving about VoIP (voice over Internet protocol) communications. The wondrous ability to make telephone calls using the Internet as a medium had everyone (except the telcos, perhaps) rhapsodising about the convenience and dramatic cost savings it brings, with enthusiasts proclaiming Skype to be the best invention since text messaging.
Now, the latest buzzword in communications is VoWiFi, which refers to VoIP services over WiFi wireless networks. No one should be surprised by the marriage of these two technologies, especially with WiFi hotspots emerging in many corners of the world.
