A new generation of internet pay phones are ready to hit the
streets in Australia, wrapping broadband access and IP telephony
into a single device.
The WebPhone, launched this week by Perth-based company, Pie
Networks, works in a similar way to existing card and coin-operated
payphones, but it runs over a wireless or broadband internet
connection, and can also double as a WiFi hotspot.
Customers using the WebPhone device will be able to check
web-based email applications, perform online transactions, download
music from online retailers, and transfer and email their
photographs from digital cameras.
